Me and my family typically only go on the big weekends. I prefer to go to Glamis over Buttercup or Gordons. I like the varied terrain, and as long as you stay down in the washes, 12 or more, you will not be surround by crazies.

The best way to get away from the crazy people is to go duning. On big weekends it is only crowded by the bill hills, and suprisingly light once out in the dunes.

We've been going to Glamis Washes for about 3 years. Haven't tried the other areas but also haven't had any problems at Glamis. We've camped at wash 3, 4, 6 and 12 and it's mostly families with kids around us. Worst thing that's happened so far is this weekend a kid about 8 got a little close to the trailer and slapped it with is flag when he turned, at least he didn't crash. It does get a little crowded at the venders, Old's and wash road on holidays. When we don't want to be around the crowds we just head off into the dunes.

Hey slyder...your almost right...it is a passing lane but why do you need to pass someone who is going the max speed limit? Take it to PIR or Firebird if you want to be a speed demon...not on the public highway.

As a matter of fact I have taken it to Speedworld's drag strip on many an occasion.

No, actually, I'm completely correct...it is a PASSING LANE. Unfortunately, most of the American public does not seem to know much about the rules of the road. There's a reason the autobahn works so well in Germany even with the high speeds. There are rules to follow, and people do it. They don't get their panties in a wad becomes someone wants to drive faster than they do.

Frankly, most of the time I'm traveling on the open road, I'm not going any faster than 70, because I've got the fifth wheel in tow. On those occasions without the trailer, yes, I do speed. Do I run down the highway exceeding the limit by 15-25 mph, heck no. You even stated that you exceed the speed limit by 3-4 mph. Whether you are exceeding the limit by 2 mph, 5 mph, or 10 mph, its all breaking the law, so don't try to sound like you're doing nothing wrong. If you want to police the public, become a policeman...until then, people will get pissed at you for blocking the passing lane.

Being as I just retired from law enforcement I think I have a better working knowledge of the Justice System than you do and as a rule most agencies allow up to 5 mph above the posted limit. You can't justify driving at an unsafe speed by saying you have the right to pass. Lets be real here...the roads here do not compare to the autobahn...not even close. Your profile reflects that you race...and racing has rules...do you break those rules?

You're right, I do participate in racing, and no I don't break the rules. The rules in racing are in place to keep the racers safe and to prevent one racer from having an unfair advantage. I do not cheat because those who do will be discovered and they will lose the respect of their fellow racers.

The signs on the side of the road also state the rules for the road..."Speed Limit 75mph"..."Stop"..."Yield"..."No Passing"..."Keep Right, Except to Pass." It doesn't take a retired LEO to know that there is a speeding cushion...I think most of us know that we can usually get away with about 5 mph over the limit.

Do I think that a 2005 Corvette is capable of running safely at 100mph on the interstate? With the right person behind the wheel...sure. Is it a smart thing to do...of course not. But, if he wants to do it, he's gonna do it. People like that also have a way of getting impatient. When someone's purposely preventing them from going the speed they want, they will risk an unsafe maneuver to get around that person. Many times that involves someone like me doing 65-70 in the right lane with a big load connected to his truck getting cut off, and I certainly don't appreciate that.

I know this little discussion is not going to change you...nor is it going to change me. I've stated my feelings. I'm sure you'll get in the last word, and in the immortal words of Forrest Gump, "That's all I've got to say about that."

True, however I don’t believe it’s due to the roads but rather the speeds that dictates the rules and well the rules are there for safety. I have heard the autobahn is one of the safest roads in the world when people follow the rules. Having driven all over this county with both trailers and just in a car it seems to me that having to pass someone on the right is far more dangerous then exceeding the speed limit??? With that in mind I am sure the people that have to drive a semi for a living would much rather run your ass over than pass you on the inside. It’s hard to believe you have this attitude with your back ground?? Unless your background was behind a desk??

Well, I think we have beat this one to death. I too would prefer to pass on the left and it does irritate me when someone in the left lane "fast lane or passing lane or whatever you want to call it" is blocking traffic. Sometimes it is just better to get out of the lane and let the speeders by than slow them up and possibly cause an accident.

I agree with you griz that this topic has seen better days...my only point was to get folks to think about how they drive and that there are other lives that they are risking besides their own.

Not yet.

azjrebel comments are actually kind of frightening. I would hope that a former law officer would know that the speed limits are only guidelines and whether a vehicle is going too fast is up to the discretion of the LEO.

Forcing people to pass on the right is unsafe. Good to know our public servants are so concerned about public safety.

azj you really should consider cruising in the right lane instead of the left....it's just good highway etiquette and a much safer way to do things. Speeders are gonna speed you being in their way is unsafe for you and everybody else on the road.
