Default Camelback question
I am looking for info on hydration packs.. Are you able to drink from them while racing/riding? Does the mouthpiece cake with mud? Do you fasten it to your helmet so you can drink while racing? Thanks. PS. Love the racing stories, you guys are doing an awesome job at these events.. I winter in Quartzsite, and get the see the parker 250 and 425, hope to prerun next year if you do it again.. little too old to race, but would like to run a lap of the course.

yes you can drink while riding. A good place to zip tie the tube is to your chest protector or back pack strap. most of the camelpacks come with a ring or tube holder. you may have to take your hand off the handle bars briefly to drink. If your tube is up near your helmet, unles you face plant into mud it should stay relatively clean.

Mine sometimes drips from the mouthpiece when the valve is turned on. Probably just getting worn out. Mine never caches up with dirt but I only use it at the sand dunes.

I love my camelbak....I have this one and I have it fastened to my chest protector. http://www.camelbak.com/sports-recre...ay-100-oz.aspx

I have a couple bladders that I rotate and clean after every trip. No issues with drinking while riding and I have the mouthpiece routed to my right shoulder. It may drip a bit...but nothing really noticeable.

I've tried several camelpacks and by far my favorite is the "Mule". It carries 100oz and has an extra, large and small pockets in front. On the longer races, The larger front pocket has been used to carry a second bladder for 200oz of fluid.
Also, Get the Camelpack brand bladder with the on/off valve (one hand operation) and the bendable tube. It is a drinking tube wrapped in a black neoprene sleeve that not only helps to keep the first part of the fluid cooler, buy it also has a piece of metal in the sleev so that the tube stays bent in the position that you put it. Pretty handy when scootin down the trails.

I don't race, but I ride alot and I love mine. I got one with a couple of zippered pockets and it gives me someplace to carry my wallet and a little bit of stuff. It gets dirty, bit not that much and its worth it for the water on long rides and hot days. Either sportsmans guide or cheaper than dirt had a deal on 3 packs of replacement bags for it.

I'm with you on the new jeans. Thanks for pointing that out, I missed it the first time! Thanks for the good info guys.. I tend to carry a lot of stuff, 35 mm camera in a bag, lunch, rain/cool weather gear for the mornings or evenings, gps, and some first aid stuff. I think I would need the something the size of the mule as a minimum.

I had the MULE, it wasn't big enough. Go with the HAWG, it will hold pretty much anything you want to stuff in there. It will easily hold all your gear plus a couple 100oz bladders of water if you're gonna be way out in the boonies.

Ok, looks like the Hawg will be my choice. What is the point of the on/off right angle valve that is an option? Does it stop the mouthpiece from leaking while you are riding or just sitting around? Seems to me if you need it, it should be included? Are there any other places in the line that you can turn the water off?
