Am I the minority here with the 6 speed manual?

I have no overdrive. I wish I did though or least a 7th gear.

Tim, I belive when Dodge made the 5 speed the buyer could have ordered a 6 speed. I at least know that they made them during those years.

Overdrive is the gear ratio. So depending on your final drive ratio it maybe overdriving the motor. For example my Allison output drive ratios are
3.10 1st.
1.81 2nd.
1.41 3rd.
1.00 4th.
.71 for 5 gear
.61 for 6th gear.
Both 5th & 6th gears 'overdrive' the engine.

If your 6th gear ratio is less than 1, then its over drive

These are my ratios for the 6 speed manual.

1 - 6.29
2 - 3.48
3 - 2.10
4 - 1.38
5 - 1.00
6 - .79

I need a 7 at about .65

your first is pretty low- granny

you can always add a 2-1 inline reducer. I have thought about for the long flat hauls. I could almost idle at 65

I will say one thing, it pulls like a mule.

When towing my trailer I will have shifted three times before I get thru the intersection. You never get in a hurry.

01 and 02 and the rare 03 are the only trucks that could be offered in a 5 or 6 spd. Everything older is the nvg4500 5spd, and of course newer is the 6.

I went to glamis this week (sun-wed) and had a blast! A little warm, but hey, it april. The crosswind on the way home was a pain though.

1999 Ram 3500 4x4 CTD, Lance 1010, 18' flatbed with a golf cart and a quad.

Entire trip average,

36gal / 404 miles = 11.22222 MPG. 65 MPH both ways. Probably 14-15 mpg going, and kinda sucky coming back due to wind.

I get 22MPG empty, fairly consistently.

Actually the 6spd option came out in 98 as an option with the standard diesel and was standard for the first few months with the HO 24 valve cummins.

Also the 5 gear in the 5spd and the 6th gear in the 6spd transmissions is overdrive.
