Default Fishing/Boat Question
I currently have a v-hull 12ft. aluminum boat. Which worked fine for me and the wife and even one child, but I have two and one on the way.

The other day I was at Cabels and saw a flat bottom jon boat 18 footer and really liked it. But heres the deal I don't really know what the big difference between the two are. I would use this boat about 98% of the time northern arizona trout lakes and tempe town lake, and about 2% pleasant, canyon and so on.

Plus the price was pretty reasonable for an 18 footer compared to a new v-hull.

Thanks for input.

Flat bottom boat are great to fish with on lakes up north. They will beat you up on the lake around here. Flat bottom boat don't like waves.

He is right. The flat bottom would be perfect for you 98% of the time it seems. They are nice because they are wide and stable. They will not cut through waves though. They will slap the tops of them. I would be very hesitant to take one out on a big lake and get very far from shore. One good wave and they will sink. From what you described, I think it would be perfect for you and the family...................

even up north the flat bottom boat can be a challange if the wind stirs up the surface, they don't seem to like rough water. You could check with the boat rentals at Tempe Town lake and see if they have any you can rent there and take one out on a windy day and see how you like it. I have a v-hull that we've had in the family now for about 40 years and I have found that I prefer the v-hull over the flat bottoms because it seems that no matter when I go out in it the wind always wants to act up

If you've been to Cabela's , I'm sure you saw the Lowe Stinger 170. I have an 07 if you're interested in something big and comfy for the whole family on any lake.
