Default Cinders 7/29 - 8/3 Question!
Hey everyone,

We planned a long stay at the Cinders this coming week and just found out about the Whiplash race going on this weekend... This is cool and we would love to watch the race, but I want to make sure that we set up camp out of the way, not have to move.

Does anyone know how things are going to be laid out and where it would be good to setup camp?

I tried calling Whiplash, but they are closed on Mondays... Also called the Coconino Forest rangers office and they said that open camping is allowed as normal, but had no info on the race and I don't want to setup in the middle of the race coarse or pits...

Any information would be great!

Thanks!

Tony

Stay on either side of the main forest service road 776 and West of the end of that road and stay out of the dry lake bed and you should be good, whiplash sets up the main pits at the end of FS road 776 and the track is usually East of where the road ends and turns in to whoop-dee-do's , and A side note that I just noticed last weekend was there is a permanent sign that Says "Race course trail head" dis regard that sign as I don't think that refers to the Whiplash race track

The track should be marked with ribbon as well as the weekend nears.

Thanks for the information!

That sounds like the area that we had planned to setup camp. I guess we will look for a spot further north on 776 or just settle for the first camp area to the south on 776 before the lake. I figure that area will most likely be pretty dusty with all of the traffic going in and out...

Thanks Again!

Tony

Last year I saw a spectator riding erratically when we all were doing our pre-run. He clubbed one of the figure 8's out in the lake bed at a high rate of speed and almost took out 2 racers. It looked like he was trying to race them without knowing the terrain. He destroyed his quad, and what looked to be his back. Keep your eyes open and scanning for this type of stuff when we head up there.

For the spectators, we love that you're up there having fun watching the race, just please keep an eye out for racers. When Sunday comes, trail speed goes out the window.

I understand everyones concern on this. I called Whiplash and spoke to them about us being up here during the race. They said that we are good West of 776 during the race. We setup north of 777 on the west side of 776.

Just being out of the heat is enough for me [8D] and we get to watch a race for free!

Good luck guys and be safe out there!

Tony
