Springerville, AZ….Almost all of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests will re-open effective Friday morning July 7, 2006, at 8:00 am. The only areas still closed to public entry will be the Potato Fire area (while rehabilitation work proceeds) and the Promontory Butte area (due to fire danger) on the Black Mesa Ranger District and the Porter Mountain cinder pit (due to construction activities) on the Lakeside Ranger District.
Stage 2 smoking and campfire restrictions will remain in effect for all of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests which means that campfires and charcoal fires are prohibited everywhere on the Forests. Smoking is allowed only in buildings and in vehicles with the appropriate use of an ashtray. Cross-country travel by motorized vehicles is prohibited. Chainsaw use must occur before 9:00 am and all engines must have an approved spark arrestor.
Stage 2 restrictions will remain in effect until sufficient rain has fallen across the entire Forests. All campgrounds and recreation areas are open including the Black Canyon Lake area. As a reminder, overnight camping in the Rodeo/Chediski burned area is not permitted due to the danger of falling dead trees.
Thus far some rain has fallen on the Forests but is spotty. Campers should be prepared for thunderstorm activity and lightning.

Apache-Sitgreaves Lifts Smoking And Campfire Restrictions
Date: July 11, 2006
Information Office: 928-333-4301
Springerville, AZ…. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests today announced that smoking and campfire restrictions will be lifted effective Wednesday morning, July 12, 2006. This means that campfires will be allowed throughout the Forests. The Promontory Butte area closed due to the extreme fire danger will also be opened on Wednesday.
The restrictions and area closures were very effective in reducing the number of human-caused wildfires across the Forests. Lightning-caused wildfires are still occurring almost daily but crews have been able to keep them small. Campers are asked to continue to be very cautious with campfires: never leave them unattended and when its time to extinguish the fire, pour water into the fire to cool it down; then place a hand directly over the fire to detect any heat still remaining and stir more water into the fire area until absolutely cool to the touch.
Visitors are reminded that weather conditions are quite variable now and range from warm and dry to cool and wet. Be prepared for rainy, wet conditions and muddy roads. If a road appears to be muddy, please do not use it as road damage can occur and a vehicle can become stuck.
All recreation areas are open, lakes and streams are stocked with trout, and hiking trails are open. Its an excellent time to visit your national forests.
If in doubt make sure you call ahead to verify the areas you plan to visit.
